Without doubt the best sitting posture is obtained on
horseback. The hip joints are the resting position with a
bend of 45 degrees. The hip joints and lumbar spine are not
loaded in an extreme position. The lumbar curve is
maintained and a perfect balanced position is obtained in
which the body adjusts its center of gravity. I am glad to
hear that Mary Gale now has succeeded in constructing a
saddle seat.

A new seat has been developed in Australia to decrease intra
discal pressure when seated and leaning forward. Australian
Occupational Therapist, Mary Gale, led a team to develop a
seat recreating the sitting position similar to a horse
saddle. This seat design fulfills the following
characteristics deemed necessary by Ms. Gale for good
seating and missing from most current available chairs.
These include;
1.A positioning in the seat which is tilted to
preserve the lumbar lordosis and a curve to prevent sliding
forward.
2.Allows trunk to thigh angles to 135° to
maintain anterior pelvic tilt while leaning forward to
work.
3.Capable of variable heights to suit the
individual.
4.Swivel to assist trunk rotation.
5.Enable the feet to contact the floor for support of
the legs.
The Bambach Saddle seat has been professionally engineered
and safety tested to meet international safety standards.
The seat is shaped to place and maintain the body's center
of gravity above the sit bones (ischial tuberosities). The
Seat is adjustable for tilt to individual preferences. The
height is adjusted by a gas lift and is on a five star base
for stability, with castors for mobility. Its high density
padded seat comes in vinyl or TuffCloth. Tests by Mary
Gale have proven that this position is ideal for maintaining
normal back curves. The result is less pressure on the discs
and, therefore, less possibility of back pain or stress
while seated in a working position. The Saddle Seat has been
used in a variety of work situations, such as, dentistry,
surgery, office/drafting, physical therapy, light
industry/assembly, jewelry/watch repair, and by massage
therapists. It is exceptionally helpful for those suffering
from low back pain.
